Lake Gaston

Public education in Halifax County is provided by three separate entities: Halifax County Schools, Roanoke Rapids City Schools and Weldon City Schools. The 15 campuses within the Halifax County Schools District serve the communities of Littleton, Scotland Neck, Enfield, Hollister, Halifax and part of Roanoke Rapids. Most students in the city of Roanoke Rapids, however, attend one of four campuses under the jurisdiction of Roanoke Rapids City Schools. Students residing in Weldon and parts of Halifax attend one of three schools within the Weldon City Schools District.

The treasure of Halifax County (and neighboring counties) is Lake Gaston. At 34-miles long with more than 350 miles of shoreline, Lake Gaston is an impressive body of water that touches five counties in two states. It runs from Virginia’s John H. Kerr Reservoir on the western side to Roanoke Rapids Lake on the eastern side. Originally built as a flood control project in the 1960s, the lake has since become a hub of recreational activity as well as a choice location for a vacation home or investment property.

One of the primary attractions for homeowners and water sports enthusiasts alike is the excellent quality of Lake Gaston’s waters. Exceptionally clean and stable, the Lake is beautiful year-round – even when it’s busy with boaters, skiers and fishermen. The fishing community appreciates the lake’s healthy stock of game fish, including bass, walleye and catfish.

Another feature of the Lake Gaston/Halifax County area is the central location. Lake Gaston is located roughly halfway between Richmond, Va., and Raleigh, N.C. Shopping, dining, entertainment, education and medical services are all within driving distance.
